Today, North Carolina punk outfit Overton have unveiled their new single, "Colony Claps." Speaking on the inspiration and meaning behind the lyrics, the band said:
"Lyrically, “Colony Claps” takes aim at gun violence in America and the political culture that allows it to continue. The song condemns the logic of “might makes right” among those in power, as well as the spectacle of leaders congratulating themselves while refusing
to fix the crisis in front of them. Its refrain, “thunderous applause,” nods to the famous line from
Star Wars: Episode III – “So this is how liberty dies… with thunderous applause” – while the title twists “colony collapse” into “Colony Claps,” a pun that suggests both societal breakdown and the sound of people cheering it on."
